Obituary: Frederick J. McHale of Doylestown, PA, passed away on February 14, 2024, at Doylestown Hospital. He was 77.
Fred was extremely shy. He once volunteered to speak to his daughter Gillian’s first grade class but required a puppet. That may surprise those who only saw him behind his true puppet stage: the pharmacy counter, where he started at the age of 10.
Fred served for 20 years as the pharmacy manager at the Doylestown Acme. After Acme, he worked as a hospice pharmacist with the Philadelphia Archdiocese.
Fred was born on November 6, 1946, to Harry and Marjorie McHale. He spent his childhood in Traverse City, MI, golfing, skiing, and fishing with his grandfather.
He enrolled at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI, but achieved a GPA that, in his words, couldn’t be written as a whole number. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served honorably as a corpsman. He returned to Ferris and graduated with honors.
Life brought Fred to Punches Pharmacy in Clare, MI. There, due to mononucleosis, he met Nancy Whitford, who, along with her antibiotics, ended up finding her husband of 42 years.
Fred enjoyed computers, photography, and building oversized snow sculptures.
Fred is survived by his wife, Nancy; his children from his first marriage, Scott, Kristen, Kelly, Patrick, and Michael; his daughter, Gillian; grandchildren; and extended family.
Friends are invited to stop by the Mesquito Grille, 128 W. State Street, Doylestown, on February 25, 2024, between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., to toast Fred’s life.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Delaware Valley Siberian Husky Rescue, where he regularly donated in honor of his grand-dogs.
