Laurence “Lorey” Kroupa passed away at home on Nov. 24, 2021.
He was born in Traverse City on Feb. 19, 1946 to Bud and Naomi Kroupa.
He lived his life on the Old Mission Peninsula and for the past 20 years on the family farm at Bower’s Harbor.
In 1970, he began selling fruits and vegetables and opened Harbor Station at Bower’s Harbor. He changed this to a flower market many years ago and residents and visitors were treated all summer long to beautiful flowers at the Station. He greeted everyone with a big smile and always had a cigar in his mouth. He also worked for the US Postal Service for 30 years, retiring in 2001. After retirement, Lorey drove the “Cool Bus” for the after school program at Old Mission UMC.
Lorey was a member of the Old Mission United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the US Armed Services, serving in Korea in the late 60’s.
Lorey and Margie were married on Feb. 5, 1977 and together they had two children, Alicia and Luke. Alicia and her husband, Steve, provided three wonderful grandsons, Will, Christopher and Alex, that grandpa adored. Luke was invaluable in caring for his dad these past few years. Lorey’s family was the light of his life.
He is also survived by his brother, Ken (America) Kroupa; sister, Kathy Bytwerk; and beloved nieces and nephews, Maylynn, Kevin, Steven, Marcos, Ben and Bethany, in addition to their spouses, Tim, Jessica, Jennifer and Katie; they all adored their uncle, as he adored them. He was always ready to shoot a game of pool with them.
He is also survived by his dog, Cole, who was always by his side.
His sister, Joan (Fred) Rohdy, preceded in him death, in addition to his parents.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Michigan for their care the past few months and a special thank you to Wendy Warren for her support through this journey.
“Love one another even as I have loved you.” Lorey believed this and lived it. May you all do the same.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church.
A celebration of life is planned for next summer.
