Obituary: Freddy Jay Johnson, age 72, of Traverse City, died in Melbourne, Florida, of pulmonary fibrosis and further complications on Feb. 25, 2019.
Born in Traverse City in 1946, he was the son of the late Fridolf and Hildur Johnson, members of Emmanuel Evangelical United Brethren Church.
Freddy served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, after which he was married to the late Sherryl Throop, the mother of his six children. Her untimely passing left a lifelong loss in their hearts.
He worked for a family business, Northern Floor & Tile, for 31 years.
He loved playing golf and tennis and had a natural talent for both. He was tough to beat and was a fierce but fun challenge to all the people he played with.
He also loved spending any spare time at the family cottage on Long Lake, pulling his children and grandchildren on skis, looking for turtles with his grandchildren and spending all possible opportunities with his family on the lake. He grew up on skis himself and passed many of those skills on to his children and grandchildren.
Known for his loving, understanding and giving spirit, he will be sorely missed by his entire family and his many friends. Freddy and his wife, Alison, shared a deep and loving relationship.
He is survived by his wife, Alison; his six children, Jeannie, Kim, Ken, Mike, Erik and Jeff. He was adored by his eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his loving sisters, Bev, Mej and June. He felt all his children made wonderful choices in their spouses, and he had a special fondness for his in-laws.
A memorial service will be held in Traverse City at the Church of the Living God at a date yet to be determined (most likely late May or early June).
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Church of the Living God, Central Methodist Church or the Cherryland Humane Society.
